All -

The email below was requested to be put-out to the island community for thoughts. I submitted this to Anthony a couple nights ago and would like to see if this is of interest to anyone else.

----

I was thinking this evening about how I might contribute more to the site. Something I think would be of great value – and unique to Infosec Island – would be a separate designation for Tutorial posts. Some of the data I would think is of interest to the community at-large should be couched as tutorial in some way, rather than the typically news-worthy Blog. For example, creating a separate tab for all tutorials and prepending “[TUTORIAL]” to the beginning of the post title would make me feel much more comfortable submitting tutorial style posts.

Example topics:
- Setting up SE Linux
- Understanding the Object-Capability Model
- Introduction to Cryptography
- Practical examples of mod_ssl
- Fingerprinting web applications
- Introduction to Kerberos
- SO much more…

I think something like this would do quite a bit for sustained rankings as everyone is looking for a tutorial for something…

BUT…This really should be quality controlled. If it were me, I would come up with a format for both text and video tutorials. Something like:

Text-based tutorial:
1 – Introduction
2 – Learning Objectives stated
3 – Step-by-step instructions with concise explanations.
4 – Practical Application
5 – Recap of material
6 – Conclusion
* Must be between ### and ### words (to avoid books being written)

Video Tutorials:
1 – Must follow Text-based format
2 – Must be no longer than X minutes

Lee,

I think this is a great suggestion. It should be pretty easy for us to add a new section, but would probably want to get a couple of tutorials put together before we invest in creating the specific section on the site.

Ideally, this new section will allow for pulling in and referencing existing tutorials, and the ability to add new ones.

Thanks for posting your synthesis Lee! We are constantly weighing options for our continued development here at Infosec Island, as our goal is to ultimately become the one-stop resource for security and compliance best practices and tools.

We have been working to increase the volume and quality of content, make available more information on threats and data loss events, and to increase the number of free network security tools available to our members.

Development is a dynamic process, and we invite our members and visitors to engage our creative team with feedback and suggestions that we may incorporate to bring added value to the community.

Please make your contribution to Island development by making your opinions and suggestions known!

Cheers!

Anthony
