Do You Know Where Your Car's Tires Are?

Tire pressure monitoring systems have been required on new cars beginning 2008 due to the defective Firestone tire debacle that occurred in 2000.  

The tire pressure monitoring systems are based on battery-powered radio frequency identification (RFID) tags affixed to each tire.  An electronic control system within the car wirelessly queries each tire and they respond with their air pressure readings.

Researchers from Rutgers University and University of South Carolina discovered that each of the tires sensors has a unique 32-bit ID that is communicated along with their pressure readings between the RFID tag and the control unit in an unencrypted stream.

The wireless stream can be intercepted from as far away as 40 meters.

Co-lead on the study, Whenyuan Xu, considers that the misuse of this flaw may be minimal, but "this vulnerability points to a troubling lack of rigor with secure software development in new automobiles."

Scenarios such as the capture of tire sensor IDs by roadside tracking devices could be used to prove that a driver (or at least their automobile) visited potentially sensitive locales - medical facilities, bars, meetings, etc.  

The use of computerized systems is ever increasing in new automobiles and manufacturers need to ensure security and safeguards are being put in place to protect against these types bugs and security flaws.  

Remember that earlier this year, Toyota was cited for phantom acceleration issues that caused massive recalls that were thought might be caused by software glitches.

Maxy Desoza I would also add information about the date code is molded on the tire. This will help consumers avoid the old values ​​and new tires on cars that are not very specific. RV magazine recently reported to prevent the tires from 8 years or more because they are more likely to fail, even if they look good.
kevin butler Thanks for the information. No self-respecting car owner should ignore tires, wheels and brakes when performing basic maintenance. Rotating your tires isn’t a maybe/maybe not matter. Or at least it shouldn’t be, if you are committed to proper car care. In order to distribute tire wear evenly for maximum tire life, you should rotate your tires at intervals suggested in your vehicle’s owners manual. Those info's are just some car tires care. Mind you guys that this could be costly. I had even pleased myself to get an emergency cash to fix my tires ready for any distraction especially during winter times.

karl fields It is an excellent electrical for monitoring air pressure inside the pneumatic tires. TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system) informs the driver about real time tire pressure via gauge, pictogram display or a warning light. This indication lets driver know when tire pressure is lower than the required pressure.

The main purpose behind the evolution of such system is to:

Avoid unnecessary traffic: It’s quite difficult to move your car aside with deflated tire that can cause unnecessary traffic or road jam.

Reduce the rolling resistance: rolling resistance is increased in low pressure tire for obvious reason which causes high fuel consumption.

It insures the vehicle safety and efficiency as well. There are several dealers like or many others who make tires and wheels while being concerned about safety measures. However, TPMS works as an add-on in vehicle safety and everyone should grab that.
