ISA Embraces House Task Force Recommendations on Cybersecurity
Internet Security Alliance (ISA) President Larry Clinton enthusiastically embraced the recommendations of the House Cyber Security Task Force commissioned by Speaker Boehner and Majority Leader Cantor and chaired by Mac Thornberry.
"The Members of the Thornberry Task Force have done a great job of studying the cyber security issue and coming up with a set of recommendations that, if followed, will result in immediate and positive improvements in our nation cyber security by promoting the adoption of proven cyber security practices standards and technologies," Clinton said.
"Even more importantly, the system they have recommended provides a pathway for a sustainable system to of cyber security that will result in securing our nations critical infrastructure while stimulating the IT engine that has provided most of the good news our economy has experienced over the last 20 years."
Clinton noted that many of the ideas contained in the House Task Force report originated in ISA's Cyber Security Social Contract published in 2008, but noted that these concepts had also been embraced in a white paper published earlier this year by a collection of IT producers and consumers and the civil liberties community.
Additionally, Clinton noted that even President Obama's own “Cyberspace Policy Review” had relied on these same concepts when it was published in 2009.
"The House Task Force Report is the most detailed and pragmatic public policy blueprint on cyber security any government entity has produced, but even President Obama's ‘Cyberspace Policy Review’ began by citing the same Social Contract proposal and all the major trade associations in the field and the civil liberties community have all also adopted the same principles in their white paper published in March of this year," Clinton noted.
"For the first time, we have a bipartisan consensus supported by both industry and the civil liberties community on a comprehensive cyber security framework. Hopefully, the Senate, too, will now embrace this approach, and we can finally move toward a sustainable public policy for cyber security that appreciates technology and economics and defines a functional, non-regulatory, role for government consistent with the nature of this 21st century problem," stated Clinton.
